Movie makers, until recently, have always relied on film as the primary medium to record and edit on. The standard size of 35mm film is what is most commonly used but it still presents challengers for the film makers. Digital video is much cheaper and easier to transfer and edit on a computer.

Film is able to capture a higher black to white contrast and a wide shot no matter how busy it may be.

In the recent years cell phones have become more common and affordable to the masses.
